Jan Hicks Creates – Flosstube #50 – Cross Stitch WIP Parade for Stitch Maynia 2019

Started working on Shades of Gold by Northern Expressions Needlearts after reskeining the large skeins of silk from Missus Sedas into smaller, more mangeable skeins for stitching.

Two new Flosstubers to check out:
CreatedtoCreateBH – has great multi-media ideas for finishing cross stitch
Cynthia Brew Creates – is a fairly new cross stitcher and has jumped in with both feet. Lots of lovely projects.

  1. I am new to floss tube and instagram but I am hooked! I’m a long time cross stitcher and what an encouragement it is to see others progress, new techniques and modifications. I have enjoyed your sew with me’s especially. The music, scenes from Hawaii and your soothing voice. Thank you for your hard work. I know it has to be very time consuming. I know it’s crazy during Maynia with daily sew with me’s but would it be possible to get color conversions for the Do-Re-Mi sampler after the dust settles. I’m not the greatest at picking colors but loved the changes you made to this chart.

    Thanks

    1. Yes, Terri, I will get that done today. I keep saying I’m going to, don’t I, and then time gets away from me.
Thanks so much for visiting with me every day. Glad you enjoy it! I still get a chuckle from people saying I have a soothing voice, though!
      Have a great week!

  2. Jan,
I love your projects and color choices! Thanks for enabling me to kit up Hoity Toity in blues and pinks. Can you tell me the name of the fabric you are working Mushrooms 🍄 on? I love it and hopefully it’s still out in Cross Stitch land. Thanks so much!
    Sue

    1. Hi Sue!
I think I may have answered this question somewhere else, lol, but just in case, I’ll answer here. I am afraid I don’t know what this fabric is. It is something I have had in my stash for a while and it no longer has a label. I know it’s a 28 ct evenweave, but don’t know why type or the color name. So sorry I can’t be of more help!

  3. Hi, Jan. I’ve just started watching your FlossTube channel and I’m enjoying it. I have a question about the muslin bags you ordered. Is there a story about why you ordered those? I wanted to go back in your past FT videos to maybe hear why you ordered them, but I’m I’m not having luck finding it. Thanks for answering my question.
    Blessings,
    Teresa

    1. Hi Teresa and welcome to my channel! Glad to hear you are enjoying it!
About the muslin bags, a conversation started around about Day 23 or 24 of my Stitch Maynia videos, about whether the plastic/vinyl fronts that are in so many of our project bags are hurting our patterns/fabric/fibers. Several people commented that they have had their patterns stick to the plastic and transfer. From that, the conversation turned to the fact that plastic is not at all good for our fabrics/flosses over the long term, like if you have a WIP that you don’t get back to for years. Pat & Ann of R&R Reproductions send out an information sheet to first time customers of their fabric cautioning against storing any fabric, but especially hand-dyed fabric in anything plastic because a chemical reaction can occur. This includes keeping our projects on Q-Snaps for long periods of time. They have had customers whose fabric has faded due to this. Out of this conversation came a comment from one viewer with a link to these muslin bags. I got in touch with Ann of R&R Reproductions/Dyeing to Stitch and they were thrilled to start carrying these in their store as an option for storing our fabrics. Whew! And there you have it! Let me know if you have any questions! I do try to include Dyeing to Stitch’s contact info in the description box of my videos so you can reach out to them if interested.

      1. Jan, thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I’ve wondered about the new fad to have the plastic fronts on the project bags myself and was concerned if over the long haul whether or not that was a good idea. That was the main reason I was interested in hearing about your muslin bag purchase. I thought it might have something to do with those bags. I’ll go back and listen to your day 23 & 24 Maynia videos. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and love of stitching. Bless you!

  4. Hi Jan. I am a quilter that is getting back into cross stitch after abandoning it for twenty years. You list all the projects you start, but do you have a rotation on which ones you go back to after they have been started? It seems that if you start 30 projects in 30 days at some point you would want to get back to them and get them finished. I am just not understanding why you start 30 new projects. Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question.

    1. Hi Kimberly! I know it does seem pretty crazy to start all of those projects and then not touch them for a while, but there is a method to my madness. Lol.

I have my projects divided into various groups. The top level groups are big projects and small projects. Within those groups, then, I have further divisions. Within the small projects group, I have one project that is my “one hour a day” project. After that gets done, I move on to another small project. You would be surprised how just working one hour a day on the smaller ones really helps to get them done.

I have my big projects split in half, at this point. I am only have half in my current rotation, in other words, and the ones in this group are those that I am further along on that I hope I can get done before the end of the year. The projects in this group are rather fluid, though, because there are times when I just want to work on a particular project. So if I get that urge, that’s what I work on.

My main reasoning for starting these projects however, is just the desire to start them. I figure, if I have the chart and all of the materials to start them, and I got the chart because I love it and really want to stitch it, what difference does it make if it’s just all of the materials sitting separately, not getting done, or if all of the materials are gathered together, and I’ve put a few stitches in it, and then it’s waiting its turn. I find it scratches that itch a little bit of really wanting to work on “insert name of the latest chart I bought”, and then it’s handy should I want to pick it up and give it more serious attention.

Hope that made sense! Thanks for asking!

  5. Hello Jan
I am trying to find a copy of the Sally Spencer pattern but it is proving to be very difficult. Do you know where I can purchase a copy new or pre loved. I know I’m very late to the party but would really like to stitch it.
King regards Chantel ( New Zealand)

    1. Hi Chantel! I’ve done some quick searching after seeing your comment and couldn’t find it anywhere. I didn’t check eBay, but I think if you do a search on there and save it, you’ll get a notification if one comes available. Sorry I’m not more help!

      1. Thank you Jan, I’ll do that.
Your work is fabulous, I know you you probably hear that all the time but it truly is inspirational.

  6. Hi Jan,

I love what you’ve done with this pattern, so much so that I had to buy it, along with a pair of colorways from Missus Sedas. I’m going with Darling and Popcorn. I think they’ll look lovely together, with the ocean blues and the cool pinks, perhaps on a deep silver ground. I have a couple of questions, if I may…

With Darling, are you purposefully work the biconvex frames for the flowers so that they’re green, and other areas more blue, or are you letting the floss change color as it pleases?

Are you doing a straight conversion of the 2 colorways, or selectively using Jan’s Pride only in certain areas, ignoring what the chart dictates?

Thanks for any advice you can give me on this, it’s my first mandala.

    1. Hi Duffy!

First, let me clarify that I only used Darling on Shades of Gold, but I did color control between the bluer shades in the floss and the greener. So the blues were one of the golds and the greens were the other shade of gold. Hope that makes sense. Let me know if you have any other questions. If you’d like to see a finished picture of Shades of Gold, let me have your email address, or email me directly through my contact info on my site, and I can email you a picture.
